If you are a member of Hawkeye ASTD and also a member of National ASTD, we have great news!

Hawkeye ASTD is forming a Chapter Team for the International Conference and Exposition (ICE) to be held May 19-22, 2013 in Dallas, TX.

If we have five qualified members register as part of the chapter team by January 31, the price per member is $1000.  This is $100 less than the early bird registration rate for ASTD members.

Gale is putting the team roster together for Natasha Porter.  If you are interested in being part of the chapter team, please contact Gale at or 319-895-8185 no later than January 20. Once you are part of the chapter team, we will contact you regarding payment preferences.

If you have questions about ICE, feel free to post them in this blog. If you have attended ICE conferences in the past and would like to comment on your experience, we welcome your input.

We took Employee Learning Week to heart last year and had several creative, fun, engaging, things for our employees to participate in. These were not required. We did offer small prizes for participating.

    • Kick off email from CEO announcing the celebration
    • Request for inspirational quotes about learning that we could post throughout the year on the Learning Center page on our intranet
    • Promoted tracking process we use to capture employee learning outside of our doors (workshops, conferences, study groups, etc)
    • Invitation to use one of our resources and provide a review of the experience in a discussion board (library books, learning style evaluations, online demos for products, system tutorials from our vendors, etc)
    • Release and promotion of a simple career planning tool to spark a conversation between managers and staff
    • Custom quiz in our online learning site that covered the various ways people can learn at our company

Tell us what you've done or plan to do so we can try to improve our week.

I am writing to share a reminder to include the Hawkeye ASTD Chapter ChIP Code (CH6101) every time you pay ASTD for a product or service. Whether you are buying a national membership, a certification program, or the latest publication from the ASTD Store, every time you include CH6101 on your order, you are contributing to the financial health of your chapter through this revenue-sharing program.

Please contact me with any questions about this program. Thank you in advance for your support by entering CH6101 on all of your ASTD purchases!

I want to publicly acknowledge the Professional Development Days Committee - Deb Dirks and Mark Olson, VP Development Marcie Van Note, and all of the chapter members who volunteered and contributed to the success of our Professional Development Days last week.

I attended both days and heard a number of comments about the positive experience participants appreciated and enjoyed. Your efforts created a positive experience with Hawkeye ASTD for guests and members.

    Thank you very much!

Earlier this year, Hawkeye ASTD partnered with the Linn County Nonprofit Resources Center and Mt. Mercy University to provide a low cost-high value day of training for anyone who works or volunteers for a nonprofit organization. Marcie Van Note, VP Development, submitted an application highlighting this successful event to national ASTD’s Sharing Our Success (SOS) program. We were notified this week that our Non-Profit Training Day was selected for an SOS award!

Here is an excerpt from the notification email:

On behalf of the Chapter Recognition Committee, I want to congratulate you and your chapter on your achievement, “Non-Profit Training Day,” which has been approved for recognition. Your effort demonstrates a replicable format for other chapters around the country to adopt and improve their chapter’s business.

Your chapter’s achievement will be recognized in the following ways:

    • A description of your chapter’s project will be featured on the Chapter Leader Community SOS webpage
    • You'll receive recognition at the 2012 ASTD Leaders Conference in Washington, DC
    • Your chapter is now eligible to be selected as a future Chapter of the Month

If you would like to read more Chapter Success stories please click:

Thanks to committee members Meg Dindinger, Jenny Barnett, Trinity Opsahl, and Marcie Van Note, as well as to each of the Hawkeye ASTD members who contributed to making this event a success!

I want to remind everyone about the Each One Reach One membership program.  For every member you recruit, your name will go in a drawing for a $25 gift card.  Time is running out for 2012!  We’re about 5 members short of our goal for 2012.  Talk to your peers, friends and colleagues!  Tell them about the member benefits  - monthly programs, networking and information-sharing, to name a few.  Let’s all get out there and recruit a new member!

As a board, we work hard to ensure your annual membership dues result in a positive return on your investment.  We strive to provide high quality programs each month that help you to perform at an exceptional level in your roles as learning and workplace performance professionals. The annual professional development seminars and CPLP study groups are additional opportunities to sharpen the saw.

As VP Administration, I am responsible for monitoring and administering the finances of the Chapter. As a non-profit, our goal is to effectively manage cash flow to provide the best possible value for our members. The annual budget and monthly financial reports are posted on the members only website for your review.  It is important for you to know how your dues are being spent and invested.

Here are the major expenditures we budget for as a chapter each year:

    • Annual national ASTD membership dues for 8 Board members ($952)
    • Directors and Officers Insurance ($450)
    • Website Hosting ($480)
    • Audio-Conferencing Fees ($390)
    • All Chapter Meeting Refreshments ($400)
    • Sponsor 2 Board members to attend ASTD Leader Conference in Arlington, VA ($2000)
    • Annual PO Box fees ($52)
    • Office supplies and postage ($200)

We have been fortunate to have organizations donate meeting space for us each month.  Local ASTD members have graciously facilitated our programs and CPLP study groups at no cost. We have not traditionally spent money on advertising for membership recruitment or program events.

The primary source of revenue for our chapter is new and renewing membership dues. We also receive some incentive money (ChIP) from National ASTD when members purchase items or renew their national membership on ASTD's website. This year we have been actively looking for sponsors for our website, programs and professional development events. Our annual professional development seminar is a major revenue generating event to help fund activities for the next year. Posting job openings also generates additional income for the chapter.

If you have questions, concerns, ideas or suggestions on how to increase revenue and/or reduce cost, I'd love to hear from you.
