Site Program Title: Journey of Purposeful Development: Empowering Managers and Employees
SHRM Credits: This program is valid for 1 PDCs for the SHRM-CPSM or SHRM-SCPSM
Description: Career development benefits individual employees as well as the organization by aligning employee training and development efforts with the organization’s mission, goals, and objectives. However, it can be difficult to clearly articulate this development to managers and employees in enough detail that they can take specific actions. An Individual Development Plan (IDP) can be used to provide these linkages.
IDPs should be viewed as a partnership between an employee and their supervisor, and outline the skills required for job success. It provides a mechanism to detail employee strengths and weaknesses which allows the organization to identify high performers for mentoring programs, leadership development, or succession planning. Finally, the IDP provides linkages between training programs and job performance.
In today’s session, an IDP framework based on competencies and skills/tasks will be shared to use as a baseline to provide a common starting point. Through discussion and hands-on activities, attendees will develop an IDP for an entry level trainer.
Top Three Learning Objectives:
1. Define how Individual Development Plans (IDP) support strategic organizational goals
2. Illustrate how an IDP can shape required resources while empowering managers and employees to own their team and individual development
3. Develop the initial IDP framework for an entry level trainer
